Comfenalco Valle Delagente is a non-profit organization that has provided benefits to formal workers and their families in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, since 1957. It creates incentives that promote comprehensive well-being through services and programs such as monetary contributions, education, housing, healthcare, culture, recreation, and tourism, among others.
Since its founding, Comfenalco Valle Delagente has sought the well-being of its people, which is why today it offers a variety of services in recreation, education, housing, culture, employment agencies, tourism, health, credit, and drug stores to its more than 800,000 users.
Challenge
Their website was deployed on WordPress on an on-premises container platform, which presented several challenges. Infrastructure management required a considerable investment in hardware and specialized technical staff, significantly increasing operating costs. Scalability was limited by the physical capacity of the available hardware, making it difficult to respond to traffic spikes. Updates and patches were slower and error-prone, compromising site security. Furthermore, the lack of elasticity affected stability and availability, negatively impacting user experience and disaster recovery.
They needed an infrastructure that would allow them to optimize their processes and reduce operating costs, while providing the flexibility to scale and test. Analyzing the offerings of various providers, it became clear that Amazon Web Services offered the best cloud-based product portfolio, along with the most robust services. AWS gave them the ability to scale quickly, adapt to changing demands, and leverage a wide range of advanced tools and platforms, all while maintaining tight control over operating costs and security.
Solution
Once the decision was made, they turned to an expert partner to support them in migrating their website to the cloud, as well as the database that supports the platform (WordPress). As part of the proposal made by the I CLOUD 7 team , the client was shown a complete understanding and management of their needs and concerns. All technical and functional questions that they had previously been unable to resolve with other partners were addressed and resolved, resulting in a successful migration to AWS .
The solution proposed by I CLOUD 7 focused on ensuring the elasticity, security, and high availability of the website, designing and implementing a robust architecture. This included the use of Amazon Elastic Container Services and Amazon Fargate to orchestrate the containerized application layer, Amazon Elastic Container Registry to store the containers, load balancers for distribution across two (2) availability zones, Amazon S3 for static content storage, AWS Config to record configuration changes, Amazon Aurora MySQL for data management, and Amazon WAF to ensure greater on-site security. A Pilot Light disaster recovery strategy was also implemented, and Amazon CloudWatch Container Insights is used as an observability tool.
Benefits
Comfenalco has achieved 99.95% website availability, with the flexibility, security, and high availability to withstand traffic spikes when new service and/or campaign launches occur. This achievement is complemented by a significant increase in its incident recovery capacity, reducing the recovery time objective (RTO) to less than 30 minutes and the recovery point objective (RPO) to less than 10 minutes, thanks to the Pilot Light disaster recovery strategy. This translated into a 70% reduction in infrastructure deployment and management times by using AWS-managed platforms such as Amazon ECS and Amazon Fargate.
With Amazon CloudWatch Container Insights as a monitoring and observability tool, benefits are being realized in several areas. In terms of performance, it has allowed us to identify, understand, and resolve issues affecting the site’s operation, resulting in a 15% performance improvement. In terms of availability, it has facilitated early detection of failures, enabling rapid recovery, improving by up to 20% . Additionally, it has improved understanding of user behavior within the website.
